Not all mobile games have to be about puzzles or your combat skills or driving a car the fastest. Every once in a while, a game comes along that will focus on what it means to be human, testing your emotional intelligence, and seeing how you react to being pushed to the edge of desperation. Always Sometimes Monsters has won various awards last year, and now it has arrived for Android devices.

Your character in this unique RPG is a down on his/her luck writer, who is broke and has now lost the love of his/her life. Your landlord has kicked you out of the house and so you now embark on a road trip to stop your beloved from marrying another. That is where the story starts and everything now is up to you and the choices you make within the game. This is a story-driven game that is more about the relationships you form within the game and the decisions (or indecisions) that you make when you have almost nothing.

Another thing that makes this game pretty special is you have the freedom to choose your character’s gender, race, sexual preference, etc and then you also go through the experiences that he/she might experience in real life. And all your choices and decisions will have consequences. Whether they’re good or bad depends on the overt actions and subtle choices that you make. And since everything is based on “reality”, what happens in the game can also be a reflection of your ethical compass.

Always Sometimes Monsters looks like a pretty “serious” but probably entertaining game to play. You can download it from the Google Play Store for just $1.99. Oh, and the only monsters you’ll probably encounter here may be yourself.
