Remember that time in electronics school, working on your PCB’s and having a hard time which resistor (with which amount of resistance) to use? Well, neither could we. But that’s not to say that this new app called “ScanR” couldn’t be useful. It just has a very specific use, and that is telling you how much resistance a resistor provides just by using your camera.
Remember that time when you wish there was an app for something very specific you were doing? Well, it seems that XDA developer “laufersteppenwolf” had this moment exactly, when thinking about resistors and how to tell the amount of resistance they provide with just one look. Now you can actually say, “there’s an app for that.” ScanR uses your camera to read the bands on a resistor to tell you the information you need about it.

Of course, there’s a correct way of using it (as with any app). The app will scan the colored bands on a resistor – scan it 20 times just to be sure – before giving you its value of resistance. Or because your eyes work as well, you can just tell it the colors you see, and it will give you the same value. Just an easier way of doing things, really.

The app is under development, so the UI isn’t really that flashy. We don’t really think you need “flashy” for this sort of app. If you want it, get it on Google Play from the link below, and also check the source link for instructions on usage and other information you might need on the app.

In 1990 when I graduate from high school with an electronic technician degree this would have been great. Today your hard pressed to find old school resistor’s.
