What’s in a name, or in this case, a codename? Rumors are swirling about that the next smartwatch that Samsung will introduce to the market is codenamed Solis. If you speak Spanish, then you know it means sun, and this probably indicates that the wearable will still have a circular display. And after the success of the Gear 2 and the emergence of circular displays among smartwatches from various OEMs, we’re not surprised if Samsung will not go back to rectangle/square ones.
Aside from the apparent codename and the rumored model numbers (SM-R760, SM-R765, SM-R770, SM-R765V, and SM-R765S, with the last two probably carrier variants), the other big news about the upcoming smartwatch is that it won’t be on Android Wear. Instead it will be running on Tizen, an OS based on Linux and which the earlier Samsung smartwatches had as well.
Aside from those things, nothing much is known about this wearable, except that we can probably expect it to have an updated user interface and probably a bigger display. While the Gear 2 has received acclaim as one of the best smartwatches in recent years, its 1.2-inch display is still pretty small. However, you don’t want to overdo it as well, as people are now more fashion conscious when it comes to what they put on their wrists.
There were some supposedly leaked pictures of the Gear S3 as spotted on the Tizen Cafe Twitter account, but there is no indication it might be the “real deal”, as it looks too much like the 36mm Rolex Datejust 2. It seems to be made of an all-metal build, with a fluted bezel and an oyster bracelet. But again, we have no idea how credible this leak is.
