It seems that Samsung wants to cover new ground as it is set to release their newest smartwatch, the Gear S3 later this year at IFA 2016 in September. They have reportedly approached luxury jewelry maker de Grisogono to partner with them in creating a “super luxury” limited edition of the upcoming next-generation wearable device. The ultra-luxury accessories market is something that apparently Samsung wants to enter and conquer as well and they believe the Italian jeweler can help make some headway there.
This isn’t actually the first time that Samsung and de Grisogono have worked together, as the latter was commissioned to work on the limited edition Samsung Gear S2, which was just released last month. The device is actually diamond-studded and despite its hefty price of $15,000, it has been a relatively successful semi-foray into that market, as 100 units are supposedly handcrafted every month. There are more than a hundred black and white diamonds in the smartwatch and it has a rose gold bezel and the signature black galuchat strap of de Grisogono.
Partnering with luxury watchmakers is a growing trend among OEMs as brands like Google, Sony, and LG have created ultra high-end devices for those who have money to splurge and an urge to have the most high-tech and yet luxurious wearables. There are no details yet on what new thing the limited edition Gear S3 will have to offer.
The next-generation Gear S3 is expected to be announced and unveiled in September at IFA 2016 in Berlin. And so the luxury edition will probably be released at Baselworld in March 2017, much like the Gear S2 limited edition was unveiled just last month at the same event.
