Finally, Samsung is throwing caution to the wind with regards to its virtual reality (VR) headset product, the Samsung Gear VR. Together with Oculus, it is putting out a consumer version of the wearable so that more people can get their hands on it and jump in on the VR bandwagon.
Initial versions of the Samsung Gear VR were only compatible to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. This new consumer version will accept more phone models from Samsung, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. With more premium smartphone and phablet models now from the Korean gadget manufacturer sporting those gorgeous Super AMOLED screens, this new consumer version of the Gear VR will have no problems with display quality.
“We see virtual reality as the next computing platform,” says JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics. That may be more marketing hype than truth, but the fact is that VR technology has provided enough momentum and excitement within its market for Samsung to make a legitimate push for market share.
The new Samsung Gear VR is much lighter than the initial Gear VR Innovator Edition. It also has new foam cushioning to make the device more wearable for users. A number of improvements have also been added, like a new touchpad to provide better control. The new Gear VR will be available in a new “frost white” color for USD$99.00 starting fall in the US.
