Almost a month ago, Samsung announced a new mobile memory storage based on Embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) 5.0 spec. Today, Samsung has shown off the latest 128GB 3-bit NAND Flash Memory Storage ideal for the mass mobile device market. This one is meant for smartphones and tablets for a more enhanced and speedier performance of mobile memory.
Samsung Electronics’ SVP of Memory Product Planning and Application Engineering Team, Dr. Jung-Bae Lee, said that the company hopes to “to take the lead in the expansion of high-density mobile storage”. The new flash memory storage also allows higher densities to meet the growing demands of mobile users.
The South Korean giant hopes to use the memory storage to this technology not only for high-end phones but also for the mid-market. This development will result in mid-range phones becoming more powerful than ever. A simple smartphone memory could soon be expanded to 128GB. Just a few more enhancements and test and this will soon boast of being the highest density eMMC 5.0 solution.
Right now, the 128GB eMMC 5.0 offers 260 megabytes per second (MB/s) sequential data reading. The mobile memory storage can do the following: up to 6,000 IOPS (input/output operations per second) in data read operations and 5,000 IOPS for write operations. That’s very fast, about four times for the read speed and ten times for the write speed, compared to external memory cards used in the market today.
Samsung also hopes to expand the business by extending this 3-bit NAND storage from SSDs for data centers, PCs, and servers to the entire mobile storage market. This is just one of the many higher-density solutions the company is planning to introduce.
