Now that Samsung has gotten its high-end devices out the door, then it’s probably time to concentrate on the mid-tier and entry-level devices. Around two years ago, they had a successful run with the Galaxy Grand Prime, so it’s no surprise that they are rumored to be coming out with an updated 2016 version. The rumor may have gotten more solid as it has been spotted in the GFXBench listing complete with an extensive specs sheet.
What is surprising with the specs, if they are to be believed of course, is that the 2016 version will be powered by a MediaTek chipset. Usually, Samsung uses either its own or Qualcomm or Speadtrum when it comes to their lower-end devices. But the listing shows the octa-core MT6737T, which isn’t really that powerful with its four Cortex-A53 cores, clocked at 1.4GHz. But it is cheaper than other chipsets, which is probably why they will be using it for this one.
Other specs indicate a 5-inch 540 x 960 pixel display (which is almost the same as the original), a 2GB RAM (higher than the previous), 8GB internal memory (which will probably have an expansion slot of course), 8MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing shooter. It will run on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow and not yet the Nougat of course.
The specs are of course not something you would probably be happy about, but if budget is your concern, then this might be a viable device if you really want a Samsung smartphone. There is no news yet as to when the Galaxy Grand Prime 2016 version may arrive in the market.
