Qualcomm has announced that its upcoming next gen Snapdragon 820 chipset will include another layer of malware protection for devices in the Snapdragon Smart Protect technology. The new tech is an on-chip “learning” feature, where the technology allows the device to learn and keep track of malware threats even without current virus signatures from OEM providers.

Currently, most devices rely on third party software to protect their smartphones and tablets from malware and other zero-day threats. These software rely on updated signatures being downloaded from their company’s servers – which means that for your device to be really protected, you will need internet connection in one way or another.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Smart Protect augments this kind of protection by by analyzing and identifying new threats even before they come out as virus signatures. The technology can “learn” about these threats and keep track of them even without internet connection. The new tech also helps mobile anti-malware application providers to perform analysis and provide real-time information.

The Snapdragon 820 will be the first chipset to have thisnew technology. Qualcomm has said on record that the new chipset should be available in the market on devices by the first quarter of 2016. So we will need to wait until then to see this new tech first hand.
