An app that hasn’t been updated for more than a year is a dead app. Well not really, but it’s probably not very useful. Having a resurrection of sorts is open source messaging app QKSMS which has rolled out its first update in two years. The developer has been in active development for the past six months and now version 3.0 of the app is finally available. And for those who want more premium features, QKSMS+ is back on the table.

The developer shared on reddit that he has actually re-written the app from scratch so you can expect that it looks “more beautiful than ever” or as pretty as any open source messaging app can get. For users who prefer apps that are really fast, he also claims that this version of QKSMS is now 10x faster than the previous one. And if you still use things like MMS, well, it’s now apparently working for version 3.0.

He also admits that this version is not near his vision for the app and so he is working on a lot of other features and updates that he’ll be rolling out soon. He wants to be able to bring things like Dual SIM support, rich message content search, scheduled messaging, delayed messaging, enhanced sharing support, and support for sending other media like video, audio, contact, location, etc.

In order for the app to be sustainable, you can also get the QKSMS+ to unlock some higher features at a price. But you can also get these unlocked features for free through F-Droid. You can get the updated free version from the Google Play Store.
