Virtual reality is not just a plot from sci-fi movies any longer. It is an actual thing that we’re experiencing right now with more OEMs producing all kinds of VR gear, accessories, games, apps, etc. Chinese device maker Pico has now joined the fray by announcing their Neo VR system, which is probably the first to have its own Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor not on the headset itself but on the game controller that comes with it.
You don’t want your VR headset to get too hot because after all it’s on your face, and so the fact that the processor, memory, and RAM is in the controller is a great advantage for the Pico Neo. The other great thing is, if you just want a VR headset, you can buy that without the controller for half the price and then just use a smartphone or computer for connectivity. The headset sports a 3.8-inch AMOLED display with a 1200 x 1080 pixel resolution and a 102 degree field of view.
But in case you want the whole shebang, the Pico Neo VR system with the headset and controller, it runs on a Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB internal storage that is expandable to 128GB through a microSD card. For connectivity, it has 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1. The controller itself has physical buttons and a touchpad on the back plus a 6-axis motion sensor.
The headset weighs 11 ounces and the controller at 8 ounces. The headset has a 5,000 mAh battery but can be charged quickly because it supports Qualcomm Quickcharge 3.0. It will reportedly be available by June and will cost around $550 for the whole system and just $300 for the headset only.
