OnePlus feels it has a great idea up its sleeve when they thought, “Hey, why not launch our newest flagship via virtual reality (VR)?” And then they thought, “Let’s give away free VR headsets!” Aaaand that’s exactly what happened, except that they ran out of free VR headsets to give away.
Carl Pei made his announcement via the OnePlus forums yesterday, that the young upstart company is envisioning launching their upcoming flagship phone, the OnePlus 3, with a VR gimmick. And what better way to do that than to give away their new VR headset, the OnePlus Loop VR, for free (people had to pay for shipping, of course). The catch was that there were only 30,000 units of said VR headset, so people had to order fast. And they did.
As of time of writing, the OnePlus Loop VR headset is out of stock via the company’s web store. Pei himself had to get on Twitter to say that the headsets were gone so fast. They were making ways by cancelling those orders without payments for shipping, but those will only generate a few more units. So if you didn’t have a chance to get one, you can feel sad together with us.
We’re still wondering how the VR launch of the OnePlus 3 will go. It’s just a few days before June rolls in and we’ll probably see the OnePlus 3 launched officially by then (hopefully without the annoying invite system). We won’t have to wait that long.
