So Google has started sending out the invitations to try out Project Fi. One Redditor gladly showed screenshots of the invite and some details about the experimental wireless service. Naturally and as with any topic on Reddit, a number of fellow geeks commented especially about some Google Voice features being not available on Project Fi. According to Google, Google Talk and Google Voice apps won’t work. This won’t also work with Obihai devices.
What we’ve learned so far on that thread were mere guesses and speculations. Google has not officially made a comment or announcement yet but I’m sure the team behind Project Fi is watching closely the feedback, comments, criticisms, and suggestions. Over on Reddit, user idreamincode, the same guy who shared the Project Fi invitation image, noted that there’s a Google representative for Project Fi: Simon Arscott, Product Manager for Project Fi aka projectfisimon.
And now we focus our attention on projectfisimon who surprisingly, answered (and still answering) all the queries about the Project Fi. He cleared several things like how the Project Fi is more integrated with Google Voice than AT&T. With Project Fi, you actually get just one bill for all calls, texts, and data. He confirmed that Obihai devices do not support the Project Fi requirements that’s why they’re not supported on the service. However, Google is looking into making some adjustments.
Projectfisimon further added that they are not completely discontinuing Google Voice or Hangouts but is just transforming the service. Those using Google Voice on Hangouts can still make calls and texts from multiple devices with one number. And if you don’t opt into Hangouts, can still get the same international rates, voicemail transcriptions, and call forwarding. Google Voice credit can also be credited on a Project Fi bill for continuous access to voicemail and message history from Google Voice.
Anyone can cancel Project Fi and go back to Google Voice, the Google rep also shared. Anyone who gets an invitation can use his Nexus 6 with Project Fi without any problem but it should be the USA SKU of the N6. Google will send a free Project FI SIM card to those who will register. Projectfisimon also said the wireless service is ready particularly in Chicago and Illinois, as well as, in 120 countries.
This Reddit thread has been quite helpful for those people who want to know more about the new wireless service from Google. We hope to hear more about others’ Project Fi experiences. Do let us know if you get an invite.
