NVIDIA recently re-packaged what was then known as the SHIELD Tablet – probably the most powerful consumer tablet around – into the SHIELD Tablet K1, in anticipation of a SHIELD Tablet X1 soon. The gaming and graphics company also promised that the tablet would be seeing an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow before the year ends. It looks like NVIDIA will be making good on that promise.
NVIDIA has just released a video to tease the update to Marshmallow on the SHIELD Tablet K1. The video shows off new app permissions, the “Now on tap” feature, the launcher’s vertical drawer and search bar, and its own cloud gaming service GeForce Now. It also shows that Android Marshmallow will let you have a microSD card as internal storage for your tablet. See the video below.
If you look at the video closely, you will see that the only NVIDIA-specific addition mentioned is a new camera application that utilizes the K1 processor to add enhancements to photos. The description of the video specifically mentions the update to come this December.
So if you own a SHIELD Tablet K1, it might not be that long a wait for you to get Marshmallow. The timeframe just leaves around two weeks for the update to be rolled out via OTA. The same update should roll out to the original SHIELD Tablet too, but that might take a little bit longer.
