NVIDIA is usually quiet right around the time the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas rolls in, preferring instead to launch major products in the past two years at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), like what they did with the NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV console. It’s right about time for a refresh of NVIDIA’s powerful Android TV console, and signs point to an unveiling at CES 2017.

Our friends over at SlashGear point to an anonymous source who has information on the matter, and the lowdown is this – we will be getting a refresh of the NVIDIA SHIELD at CES 2017. The refresh will reportedly not affect the name of the product, and the hardware updates will be mostly for faster connectivity and better power efficiency.

For instance, the updated NVIDIA SHIELD will reportedly roll out with support for 802.11ac Wi-Fi and will have MIMO antennas to get the best speed possible for the device. It will reportedly roll out with a new remote and new gaming controllers as well. For the SHIELD controller, the rumor is that it will now connect to the device via Bluetooth Low Energy instead of Wi-Fi Direct.

It will be interesting how they position the older device when the refresh comes out. Will NVIDIA do the same to it like they did with the SHIELD Tablet – which is, take off a few elements and sell it for cheaper, or will they phase out the older devices and run exclusively with the new ones? There’s not long to wait for this, CES 2017 will be happening on February 2017.
