In keeping with the trend of analog or traditional watchmakers branching into the wearable smart device market, sports watch maker Nixon has now come up with a smartwatch called Mission that is marketed for extreme sports enthusiasts. This is because the device is built for the ultra rugged lifestyle and has a water resistance for up to 100 meters so it is ideal for activities that may involve water like snowboarding, surfing, or even swimming.

The Mission may sound like a movie, but is in fact a sports smartwatch that not only looks tough and is supposed to be tough in real life as well. It has a 1.39-inch AMOLED touchscreen paired with Gorilla Glass to give it a tough surface. The watch material is made from a combination of polycarbonate and stainless steel. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 2100 and is actually the first smartwatch to have this chipset. It has 512MB RAM, 4GB of storage and when your battery is fully charged, it can last for a day.

In terms of what you can get out of the Mission, you have the usual sports tracking features and sensors like GPS, thermometer, altimeter, gyrometer, accelerometer, e-compass, and humidity. There is also a flagship app meant for surfers, snowboarders, and skiers. It will show you surf and snow conditions around the world from data collected from reliable sources like Surfline, SnoCountry, and Trace.

You can also customize some parts of the device, like with the finish, bezel, silicone band colors, and the digital displays as well. The price for the basic Mission sports smartwatch is $400, but of course it can change depending on the parts or materials that you choose. It is expected to be out in the market by October.
