Ever since Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata back in March mentioned that they are working on a new gaming console, speculation has been rife about what the Nintendo NX will be all about. The latest news coming out of the grapevine is that the upcoming device will be running on Android to make it easier for third-party developers to create products for it as well. If there is any credence to this, it will join Nvidia as an OEM creating Android powered gaming systems.
It may not be the biggest name in gaming now, but people are still highly interested in whatever Nintendo comes up with. And the highly mysterious Nintendo NX is surely keeping everyone guessing. According to Japanese newspaper Nikkei, an insider told them that in order for game developers to have an easier time coming up with products, the company decided to have their newest baby run on Android. What we do know is that Iwata briefly mentioned that the NX will be a “dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept”.
Since the new product will probably still be a dedicated console, it’s more likely that Nintendo will be doing an advanced modification of Android to fit their needs and bring smoother performance and better support for media apps. But more than anything else, it might mean bringing better developer tools so that more games and apps can be created on the console.
But, no word yet on the street whether or not this rumor has legs. And unfortunately, we still have to wait until 2016 to get the official information about this mystery product.
