Google yesterday launched its new neoprene sleeves for the Nexus 7 on the Play Store, available only in the US and Canada. Buyers immediately grabbed the accessory, even when faced with a strangely high shipping cost. Google is now refunding that shipping cost as it revamps the shipping options.
The new sleeves cost only $29.99 but buyers were charged shipping starting from $17.98 to almost the same price as the sleeve itself. Nonetheless, some still bought it at that price and Google is now giving them back the full amount of the shipping charge. This practically means that they’re getting the sleeves shipped for free.
That’s not the only thing Google is doing. The Play Store now has a new shipping price tier, starting with the “Saver” option of 5 to 10 days for $3.99. “Ground” shipping will take only 3 to 5 days but cost $7.99, while “Two Day” shipping will cost $11.99. Sounds just about right for a sleeve.
Whether it was just a fluke in the system or something Google was really planning on changing, we’ll never know. Not everyone who bought the sleeve with the old shipping price has received the notice yet, so some amount of waiting is needed. And even after that, some more waiting is required as it will take some time before the refund appears back in the bank.
