In a move that may probably cause confusion among Opera users, instead of just updating the existing Opera Max Data saving app, what the developer has done is create a new app listing at the Google Play Store. Called the Opera max Data boosting app, which looks like just a version 2.0 for the older data saving app. But what the boost actually does to help you save/boost your data is still unclear for now.
The Opera Max app has actually been a pretty useful browser app for mobile users who are carefully keeping track of their data usage. What it does is it compresses the data before it reaches your phone so that it won’t eat up much of your data as a regular browser does. It was just updated last month, although nothing major except it’s now available for Android tablets. But now it looks like there is a newer version in the face of a new app.
Opera Max Data Booster looks mostly similar to the Data Saving app, and even the UI elements are pretty much the same. It also puts a VPN on your mobile device and it will tell you how much data you’re saving, just like the other app. What’s different is that it has a Data Booster feature with a Boost button that you are encouraged to press repeatedly. It will supposedly turn on data saving, but if you’ve already connected to the VPN, then that’s the same function.
What some people are reporting though is that ads appear a few seconds after you press the boost button. We’re hoping this is just a bug that they haven’t caught yet and that the difference between the two apps will become clearer later on.
