With renewed interest in space activities due to the drive-by near Pluto and all sorts of meteor showers, moon-related activities, and all, NASA is looking once again to involve the public, specifically the more tech-inclined people. They posted on freelancer.com a contest and challenge for people to design a smartwatch app that astronauts can use while in space. And it’s not just a matter of getting your design picked. You even get cash reward if you do win the competition.

The contest is not limited to developers, programmers, and designers, as you don’t have to actually make the app to enter the contest. You just need to submit your complete design as image wireframes complete with the design for navigation, interaction, layout, look, feel, etc. Presumably, NASA will do the rest, or at least hire someone who can feasibly create the app for them. Oh, and also, you need to design this app using the Samsung Gear 2 as your hardware reference.

The contest also is not a “design your dream app for astronauts to use in space. They are very specific as to what they want to see in said app. It should include an agenda view of their timeline, which they can now view using their laptop or iPad. It should also be able to display color-coded warnings and cautions. There must be a communication status update that can show whether or not the astronaut’s vehicle can communicate with the ground crew.

All these functions should be available in just one app and should direct the astronaut’s attention to the information they need. The winner will get $1,500 as a reward and of course bragging rights that their app will be used in space. Contest details in the source link below.
