Whoever said that selfies are harmless because they never killed anyone clearly hasn’t been reading the news lately. We wish it was from satire sites, but it seems that there have been several people over the years that have died due to carelessness from taking their selfies. Well the city of Mumbai in India wants to put a stop to those senseless deaths by establishing no selfie zones around the city, after another girl died while trying to take a picture of herself.
This is actually not the first time that a place in India has banned selfies, but it is the first time that there are designated and specific places where you cannot take pictures with your front-facing camera. Some of the fifteen places included in the list are Girgaum Chowpatty beach, Sion Fort, Worli Fort, and Bandra Bandstand. They plan to put “life guards” and put up signs as well in these places where they cannot take selfies.
The most recent reported death is that of an 18-year-old who drowned when she fell into the sea while trying to take a picture of herself. A few months back, a Japanese tourist reportedly fell down the stairs at the Taj Mahal while trying to take a selfie. A Hindu festival has also declared itself a no-selfie zone to avoid any accidents in case of a stampede.
India isn’t the only nation to have had “death by selfie” accidents. Amusement parks like Disney have banned selfie sticks (but not selfies themselves) for the safety of the cast members and visitors alike. And since a lot of OEMs have been creating selfie-friendly features for their smartphones, expect that selfies will not go away anytime soon. Now if only people would be more careful.
