Just a few weeks back, we wrote about Microsoft dipping into new technology for virtual reality (VR). Their research was called Flashback, and at that time, we only knew a few things about it – like it would give enhancement to a device’s VR performance. Microsoft Research was talking about better framerates, less latency, and less energy consumption – and with this new video, we know exactly what they are targeting.
Microsoft, if ever it introduces Flashback, will target the lower end of the market, giving a boost to devices with lower specs and giving them the ability to still experience VR. These days, VR capability is almost restricted to higher-end devices, with great processors, strong graphics chips, and high RAM quantities. As such, VR is still out of reach for the lower end of the market.
Flashback technology takes advantage of pre-rendered frames instead of real-time rendering. This moves the load of the CPU and GPU to storage, and Microsoft is saying that storage is now speedy and cheap even on most low end and midrange devices. Flashback technology can potentially improve performance of VR on low end devices, giving them better framerates and consuming less energy.
The catch is this, that we don’t know if Microsoft will find a partner to distribute the tech or if they even want to. But judging from Microsoft’s movement in the VR and mobile software arena, there might be a good chance that we will be seeing Flashback technology on devices soon.
