When you plug devices in and out of USB ports, chances are you would sometimes just mindlessly plug it in, only to find out that you were plugging it the wrong way. Even worse, sometimes, you would actually damage your cords or even your device because you’ve been plugging it in wrong so often. And even though the reversible USB-C is soon to invade the market, it will take some time before it even becomes a thing. But for now, you can rely on MicFlip, the world’s first reversible USB cable.

MicFlip is actually an IndieGoGo crowdfunded project that will try to make life easier for those dealing with USB-A and Micro-USB cable problems. It is made of “an ultra-strong braided nylon lead, a robust aluminum shell and gold-plated plugs to prevent corrosion.” But the more important feature is that it is reversible on both ends, so you won’t have to carefully plug it in, even though there is still a fixed orientation on the ports.

They don’t exactly explain how they do it (except that they can) but looking at the images, it may be because they have thinned the plastic tongue inside the plug. That means, the electrical contacts can be present on either side of it. The braided nylon cable also makes it more durable so that gives you less worry as well.

It seems that a lot of people are sick and tired of irreversible USB cords, since the project has more than reached its $6,000 target, with 25 days to go until the campaign ends. You can back it for as low as $15, and you already get a MicFlip, which they plan to sell at a retail price of $20. Estimated shipping is by September this year.

This is a crowdfunded project, and as such may not deliver what its creators initially promise. Most crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, have policies about what happens to your money if the project fails to deliver on its goals, but choosing to back a project is inevitably a risk. Android Community’s reporting on crowdfunded projects should in no way be seen as an endorsement, unless specifically stated, and we recommend closely examining the terms and conditions to understand your individual rights as a backer before making a pledge.

  1. Buyer Beware!! They will take your money and not ship. My Order#13487537 was purchased in September and they’ve lied about it being in the mail and stated they would resend only to do nothing and then stop responding all together. They have been reported to Indiegogo and I am in the process of reporting them to the authorities. It’s going to be difficult because they are shipping from outside the US, but I think it is worth the effort to stop these criminals.
