A lot of people have been saying that 2016 will be the year when virtual reality will finally make its mark into the consumers’ hearts. But for that to happen, headsets have to be readily available of course. We heard about Coke who will be turning their 12 pack boxes into free VR headsets, but now another big brand is starting to do so too, at least in the Nordic region. McDonalds Sweden has announced that their Happy Meal boxes will be turned into Happy Goggles this March.

On the weekends of March 5 and March 12, McDonalds Sweden will be releasing 3,500 very special Happy Meal boxes in 14 restaurants that can be turned into Happy Googles, or a virtual reality headset for young kids (and adults too of course). To turn them into VR sets, all you have to do is to tear along some perforated lines, insert the VR lenses that will be included in the box, and then insert your own smartphone (not included in the box of course).

This VR push is just in time for the Swedish Sportlov holiday wherein a lot of people go skiing. McDonald’s even created a ski-themed VR game called Slope Stars which you can play with either the Happy Googles or any VR headset for that matter. And in case you’re not into the whole virtual reality thing but like to play ski games, then you can also do so without it.

While the Happy Goggles will only be available in Sweden for now, it will also serve as a trial run so we might see this expand globally soon. The Happy Meal will cost around $4.10 and will only be available for a limited time and in limited numbers, so if you’re in Sweden, better hurry and get your own VR goggles.
