if you feel nostalgic whenever you remember all the fun you had when you were young and viewing slides in your View-Master, (well, if you’re of that generation that is) then you will feel all sorts of feelings when you hear that Mattel is releasing a new version of the classic children’s toy. But it’s probably not as you remember it. The new View-Master VR headset has of course been updated with new technology and is even compatible with Google Cardboard.
The updated version of the View-Master isn’t just about viewing the tiny photos that looked bigger and more alive when you saw through the lens of your toy. Now, you can actually immerse yourself in a virtual world and see these images in 3D. You can see various angles and parts of the story through any app that works with Google Cardboard or through the actual apps that Mattel has also created and co-created.
Currently, there seems to be three apps under View-Master: Space, Wildlife (with National Geographic), and Destinations. These are free apps with preview content and if you want the whole “experience pack” you can buy them through in-app purchases for $15 each. Aside from the physical reel experience, you also get a bit of augmented reality, like if you point your camera at a “real” object, then you get a preview.
The View-Master VR headset is compatible with the newer, high-end smartphones around, like the Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, S6, and Note 4, HTC One, Google Nexus 6, Motorola Moto X (2014), and LG G3 and G4 models. You can but the starter pack for $29.99 through the Target online store.
