Together with Samsung’s newest flagships launched at MWC 2016 in Barcelona, Samsung is also putting out some gaming accessories for users to enjoy the serious hardware and specs in the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. One of those is the S.U.R.F.r gaming controller made by gaming accessories outfit Mad Catz and headlined as “optimized for Samsung”.
To be totally transparent, you have to know that this is not the first time we’re seeing the Mad Catz S.U.R.F.r gaming controller – it was launched by Mad Catz in MWC 2015 (see the image ablove). Now we don’t know about the whole “optimized for Samsung” tagline – we’re not saying, of course, that the Korean manufacturer is being a bit disingenuous. We’re just saying, we’ve seen this controller before and on the outside there seems to have been little or no change evident from its 2015 incarnation.
The idea behind the S.U.R.F.r is that it’s a multifunctional accessory that you can use when you’re using your Samsung smartphone for gaming – that’s what the integrated D-pad is for, and that’s why the device is held like a gaming controller to begin with. But as a bonus, you can also surf your social networks – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the like – and update your status using the built in QWERTY keyboard.
The new thing, if any, is that it now integrates a cradle for your smartphone when gaming on the go. It might be that the whole “designed for Samsung” is in the software somewhere, but it does feel like the tagline is trying to say that this was something designed specifically for Samsung – but we know this not to be true. Mad Catz designed and released it in 2015 when the Galaxy S7 was just in the imagination of Samsung’s engineers.

Seems pretty cool. I’ll stick with my PS3 controller for now… ?
