It looks like people aren’t that satisfied anymore with just a simple picture as a profile picture. We’ve seen a lot of different apps and services like Facebook, Snapchat, etc give their users the option to use videos as their profile, if they want to make a good first impression. The latest update to popular messaging app LINE also brings this option, as well as other new features like limited free voice calls (with a slight catch) and the ability to upload five minute videos in your chats.
Since your profile page is the first thing that people will see when they add you as a friend, if you want to make a creative or lasting impression, you’d probably want to use a video profile to do that. You can use LINE’s built-in egg selfie app to create that video and add some filters or stickers to make it even more interesting. However, it will only play on certain screens, and if the person viewing it doesn’t have a supported device, then they will see a still image, so you still need to have that one good still.
If you want to make free LINE Out voice calls through the app, you now can do so and all they ask in exchange is that you watch a recommended video (probably an ad) before and/or after the call. When you select the Call section in the More tab, you’ll see two options: the paid LINE Out service or the free one, which involves watching said videos. It is now only available in the US and Australia but they will eventually expand to other territories as well.
The update also includes the ability to upload up to five minutes of video, regardless of size, to your conversations. You can also now receive and display animated GIFs when you chat. You may also notice a slight redesign to the timeline when you update your LINE app through its Google Play page.
