If you like to tweak your Android devices and you happen to own an LG device, you would most likely be familiar with the situation – it’s highly possible that you will encounter a locked bootloader when trying to gain root access and install custom recovery. The South Korean manufacturer has been making noises about allowing for unlocked bootloaders, but we haven’t seen it – until today.
On the LG Developer website, instructions for unlocking bootloaders have appeared. It seems that starting this year, LG will start letting users unlock the bootloaders of certain LG smartphones. The first smartphone in this process will be the European release of the LG G4, model number H815. If you are an owner of this device, you can visit LG’s developer page and go through the unlocking process. Of course, as things work in Android, unlocking your bootloader also means forfeiting your warranty.
From what we’ve heard, LG is saying that it will start to add more devices in this developer process. That gives hope to LG G3 and G2 owners that maybe soon, they will be able to officially unlock their devices. Of course, with older models, the Android developer community and after-market dudes have made ways of unlocking the bootloaders themselves.
