While Samsung is getting the big buzz about their reported integration of the Sound on Display technology in their future products, someone else may beat them to the punch when it comes to releasing an actual device with it. The upcoming new flagship device from LG, the G8, may actually come out with a similar (but probably differently named) feature. This is according to the latest tidbit from notorious leakster Steve H aka @OnLeaks. Whomever comes first will of course have the market advantage over this new technology.

According to the tip, the LG G8, which should be announced sometime in the first half of 2019, will already have the Sound on Display or whatever they will call it when it is released. Meanwhile Samsung will reportedly be demoing an advanced Galaxy prototype with an OLED screen that has SoD at the upcoming Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas next week. But their flagship this year, the Galaxy S10, will still have the regular, conventional earpiece and speaker.

Sound on Display isn’t just a unique feature for the sake of being different. Using vibration and bone conduction to transmit sound, it can eliminate the need for a small, physical speaker on your phone. This means that we are another step closer to achieving the all-screen ratio that we have been dreaming about, without having a notch on top. The Vivo NEX actually has this already with its Screen SoundCasting, but having a Samsung or an LG means better marketing and distribution for devices and the tech.

If indeed the LG G8 will sport this tech, this will allow them to have a record-breaking screen-to-body ratio which seems to be the ultimate goal of most OEMs these days. But there’s no news as well if they will still have a notch for the front-facing camera or have a hole-in-display design for it.

The upcoming CES as well as the Mobile World Congress in March will be crucial for all of the brands as they try to one-up each other in terms of bringing something new to the smartphone industry. We’ll keep you posted for any more leaks and rumors when it comes to Sound on Display and other similar tech.
