A few months back, we told you about this weird and quirky smartphone line being released by LG, but only in its native South Korea. It looks like this unique device, called the LG AKA, became a big hit not just with consumers but even with award-giving bodies, winning an IF Design Award for its “unconventional approach to smartphone design”. Now it’s being released in other countries, specifically Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Turkey, and maybe even more markets in the pipeline.
In case you’ve forgotten, the LG AKA (pronounced “aw-kuh”) is a smartphone with interactive, animated eyes, and customized “personalities”. Owners can also DIY their phone’s design with stickers, markers, paint, glasses, mustache, etc. The wallpapers, widgets, ringtones, etc are also themed according to your smartphone’s personality. They have four different personas: Eggy (yellow) who’s always in love, Wooky (white) the impulsive one with a strong personality, Soul (navy blue) the musical one, and Yo-Yo (pink) who’s always on a diet.
To celebrate their international release, they’re including an Art Toy figurine with the smartphones. If you take a picture using the AKA’s Snapshoot tool, it will then make an animated 3D version of the figurine that will appear together with your photo (probably a selfie eh?). LG has also collaborated with TUBA Entertainment to launch a new series called Rotary Park that will debut on YouTube on March 20.
They have not released the pricing details for the LG AKA in other countries, but we can expect more or less the same price as in South Korea, which was around $455. Let’s see if it becomes a hit elsewhere and if they would actually release it in the North American market.
