A few years back, if you had to take a 360-degree video, you would have to spend a ton of money and lug around heavy and complicated equipment. But now, since OEMs are determined to make virtual reality happen, we are seeing a bunch of mobile, portable devices that will help you make 360-degree visual content without having to break your back or your wallet. The LG 360 Cam is one of those and it’s coming soon to your friendly online and retail stores.
Introduced as one of the LG G5’s “friends” at the Mobile World Congress last month, the LG 360 Cam is actually the first from a smartphone manufacturer to be optimized for Google Street View since it has support for the Google-backed Open Spherical Camera (OSC) API. This means you can capture, upload, and share your photos and videos if you have Street View installed in there. And you don’t even need to download or process the files which will take up a lot of time. You can do it live even as you’re on the street.
The cam has three embedded microphones and even supports 5.1 channel surround sound recording to really give you that 360 feel. It has a microSD card that can hold up to 2TB of content. The internal battery is at 1200mAh so you can record video up to 70 minutes straight. It can capture both a 360-degree spherical mode and a 180-degree hemispherical mode.
However, there is no pricing and availability details yet from LG. But one thing’s for sure. It should be affordable enough so that consumers will bite the 360-degree and virtual reality apple (not that apple) being set before them.
