Besides all the other cool things that Japan has, consumer electronics manufacturer Sharp has seen it fit to produce the SH-M02-EVA20, which is, ostensibly, a smartphone themed after the seminal anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The series is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and all sorts of product tie-ins and the like will be available for Evangelion fans. This phone is specifically a product tie-in between Sharp and 7-Eleven stores in Japan.
There will only be 30,000 units of this cool smartphone to be produced, and so fans will have to sign up at a local 7-Eleven store in Japan to get a chance to purchase the SH-M02-EVA20. It is a sight to behold, really, bedecked in purple and green and orange buttons, with a special Evangelion Unit 1 robot printed on the back. The Android 5.0 Lollipop software on the phone is also tricked out with the same color schemes and Evangelion aesthetics – wallpapers, custom sound effects, and all the geeky stuff Evangelion fans would surely go crazy over.

The specs of the phone is a bit anti-climactic, really nothing to write home about. The smartphone will have a 5-inch HD (720p) screen powered by a quad-core 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and supported by 2GB RAM. It will have 16GB internal storage and is expandable up to 32GB with microSD cards.
The specs are ok, they will do the job, but imagine if they gave this some real power – that would have made it a real collector’s item. But be that as it may, we think the 30,000 units would all be gobbled up by the fans anyways, even at a flagship level pricing of USD$700 (wow). We’re just probably bitter it’s not going to reach anywhere near us.
