Like processor speeds, storage capacity and data transfer speeds, there are just things in technology that just keep going up. One of them is display resolution, both for big screen and mobile devices. This year we’ve just seen our first 4K display on a mobile device via the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. Ultra HD 4K TVs are now becoming the norm, but Japan Display – known purveyor of LCD screens – says 4K is just not enough. Then they up and created a 17-inch 8K screen.

If you’re trying to get a handle on the screen resolution, here it is – it’s a whopping 7680 x 4320 pixels. 4K display resolutions are technically at 4096 x 2160, while consumer Ultra HD screens are really at a lower 3840 x 2160 resolution because of aspect ratio problems for TVs. That’s just a difference of a couple of hundred pixels, but who’s counting when you already know that an 8K display exists somewhere in Japan?

Japan Display says they’ll be displaying this outrageous LCD screen at CEATEC 2015, which is in a week’s time in Tokyo. Japan Display says that while consumer applications of this technology may still be a few years away, they can see industries benefitting from this – like video editing, medical displays in hospitals that need high levels of accuracy, and gaming. The display has a viewing angle of 176 degrees, and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. Everything is displayed – assuming you have 8K content – at a refresh rate of 120 Hz, double the 60 Hz you are experiencing right now on normal displays.

There are no details yet on how much an LCD monitor with this resolution will cost, Japan Display is not telling us just yet. But if you can imagine 8K content, then you know a display like that won’t come cheap.
