We knew advertisements would soon begin showing up in our Instagram feeds, however the company has recently shared a bit more detail in terms of what these will look like and how it will all work. There wasn’t a specific date given in terms of when and instead Instagram has said these will be arriving sometime in the “next couple months.”
Perhaps in anticipation of the uproar that will likely follow the arrival of the advertisements, Instagram has said they will initially be “delivering a small number of beautiful, high-quality photos and videos.” Similar to the lack of a specific date, Instagram has yet to name any of the advertisers. At this time it was said they would be from a “handful of brands that are already great members of the Instagram community.”
Simply put, it looks like the folks at Instagram are going to try to ease users in. The other item mentioned was frequency. But again, the Instagram team was light on the specifics having only said users will be seeing an “occasional” ad in their feed.
Further details here point towards how the Instagram team is trying to “make any advertisements you see feel as natural to Instagram as the photos and videos many of you already enjoy from your favorite brands.” With that in mind, it seems fairly easy to take a stand and think this will ruin Instagram, however we are going to try going in with a more open mind. And who knows, maybe you will end up discovering some share-worthy images that are actually being sent as an advertisement.
Finally, while the ads are coming and there is nothing Instagram users can do short of leaving the service, it does appear as if you will have some control. You will be able to hide any advertising that you do not like or otherwise object to, and there will also be the opportunity to provide some feedback.
