We’ve read the studies and articles. We’ve seen the cautionary tale ads and videos. We’ve looked at the guilt-inducing memes. And yet, we still can’t put the phone away when we’re at the dinner table. There are various reasons for this, some legit (for doctors, emergency personnel, those waiting for really important calls), or some who just can’t bear to be separated from their gadget. Ikea will not solve this issue, but they do have a more convenient way for dealing with it with a new “Logged Out” placemat.
This is actually part of the Swedish furniture powerhouse’s 2016 catalog and its new Sittning collection, a line of basically anything you can put on the dinner table. It’s basically a placemat that has a pocket whose main purpose is for you to have a place on the table to stash away your smartphone, but will also not make it that easy for you to take it out every few minutes and avoid any social interaction with the people on the table.
It also won’t stop your smartphone from receiving any text messages or calls, but at least it’s reachable if ever you do need to take that call or read that message. But since it’s hidden in that pocket, hopefully, you’ll think twice about being rude or just being distracted by your device.
Now the best solution would still be to follow the rule of not bringing your smartphone to the table, but at least Ikea’s Logged Out placemat can be a compromise. No word yet as to how much the placemat will cost and when exactly in 2016 it will be available.
