Well, it wasn’t that much of a surprise anyways, as we were all waiting for Huawei to unveil their new flagship phablet. The Huawei Mate 8 sports a gorgeous 6-inch FullHD (1080p) display powered by the brand spanking new Kirin 950, Huawei’s in-house SoC (system-on-a-chip). The Kirin 950 is a beast, it has an octa-core design, with four A72 cores that run at 2.3Ghz, and four A53 cores that run at 1.8Ghz, as well as a low power co-processor that handles low power processes. You have a choice of RAM – either 3GB or 4GB, and a range of internal storage capacities from 32GB all the way up to 128GB.

The phone features a fingerprint sensor at the back, and has with it a monster 4,000mAh battery – which is expected for all the power that screen and that Kirin proc needs. You also have Cat 6 LTE connectivity, Sony’s IMX298 camera sensor at the back, and Huawei’s EMUI 4.0 skin that has Android 6.0 Marshmallow underneath.

The phone is up for pre-order now, with the lowest variant (3GB/32GB) at USD$500. The 4GB/64GB variant is priced at USD$578, and the top end 4GB/128GB at USD$688. That’s pretty steep pricing from the China-based company, which heralds the fact that they are ready to take on big boys Samsung, Sony, and LG at their own game. What do you think of the Huawei Mate 8?
