Huawei’s new budget phone, the Honor 5X hasn’t hit the US market yet, and already it has received a sort of major update, if you think that keeping your device secure is an important thing. The smartphone will be released this January 30 but the security patch update is now available and so when you buy it at the end of the month, then your device will already be updated. Not a bad deal, if you’re looking for a low-end secondary phone or even as a main gadget as well.
An early owner of the Honor 5X has posted screenshots of the security update, showing that the Android security patch level is dated January 1, 2016 (A Happy New Year’s gift for the owners!). The update has a file size of 111MB which shouldn’t be pretty heavy if you already have your smartphone. But if you’re still planning to buy it when it comes out in the market at the end of the month, then it means it’s already pre-installed.
If this is the first time you’ve heard of the Huawei Honor 5X, let us refresh your memory. The follow-up to the Honor 4X released in 2014, this one has a 5.5-inch screen, 1080p display resolution, Qualcomm 64-bit Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor, Adreno 405 GPU, 2GB/3GB RAM, 16GB built-in storage, microSD card slot, 13MP camera with dual LED flash, 5MP front-facing camera, Quick Charge 3.0 support, dual SIM support, 4G LTE connectivity, and a 3,000mAh battery.
While this update may not seem major, security patches are always welcome, especially in the advent of the Stagefright virus which gave Android users such a, well, fright. Ever since then, Google and the OEMs have promised to give regular security updates to help patch up that problem.
