The 2014 flagship device of HTC, the One M8, will now have the distinction of being the first HTC smartphone to be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The newly released One A9 is of course the first one to run it but it comes out of the box already, and so the One M8, the Google Play Edition at least, will be the first one to move from Lollipop to another sweet thing.
This update was actually shared by Mo Versi a few weeks earlier. The reason of course why the One M8 GPE version is first out of the door for Marshmallow is because updates are handled by Google themselves and only pushed out by the OEM. They have no sense however. Wait, we mean to say Sense, the UI build exclusive for HTC devices. The other versions of the One M8 will probably receive it later on, as HTC will be taking care of the updates, which includes updates to Sense as well, then be pushed to the devices by the carrier.
Probably to follow soon on its heels is the current flagship, the One M9, as well as the other One M8, this time, the one with Sense. The exclusive software, which modifies and builds on the current Android UI, may be the reason why update to the “regular” devices comes a little later.
If you own a Google Play Edition of the One M8, you can already start updating your device. The download is around 450MB so make sure that your connection is pretty good. The updates to the regular One M8 and the One M9 will reportedly start rolling out before the end of the year, with an additional 10 devices getting updated by 2016.
