Navigation apps are becoming more competitive by adding features and other goodies that will one-up their competition. One of the more aggressive apps to do so is Nokia’s HERE, and this week, what they are adding are the reversible express lanes that some cities employ to help curb the rush-hour traffics in highways and expressways. They are actually the first app to do so, and they’re doing it in real time of course, providing even more helpful information for drivers and passengers as well.
It is pretty important to be able to include these reversible lanes (also known as counterflow lanes in other countries) so that drivers will be able to determine which direction the reversible lanes will be going and avoid frustrations from changing routes or choosing a different route than previously determined. Avoiding congestion and getting to your destination on time even during rush hours is one of the primary reasons people use navigation apps.
Since reversible lanes are usually switched twice a day in most of the cities, it is also important that users have access to this, especially if they are just visiting and are not familiar with the area. The cities that will have this feature are Chicago, Denver, New York, New Orleans, Minneapolis, Seattle, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Washington DC, and Hamburg (Germany).
The reversible lanes are already included in the latest update to the HERE app, including Android and for Amazon Fire Phone. There is also a HERE API that developers that have map apps can use. Product Manager Joe Ciprian said, “Our driving mission at HERE is to create the best maps possible. This adds another layer to make our maps that much more accurate and precise.”
