It looks like Google’s first foray into smartwatch apps outside of the Android Wear platform may not be as successful or as well-received as they would hope for. Early reviews for their News & Weather app for the Apple Watch have not been kind, so they might want to get back to the drawing board for this one. Even Yahoo, who has long been a very far bridesmaid to Google, has apparently made a better one than their rival.
Unlike the Android mobile and Android Wear version of News & Weather, this Apple Watch version seems to be just like any other app, only not as good. You can only see text and a header image taken from Top Stories. While it is understandable that you can’t do much reading on small screens, but there are a few workarounds there, like what they’ve done with the smartwatches running on their own platform. Yes, you see headlines and yes, you can save the articles to Safari through Force Touch.
We’d understand if this is the first time that Google has gone iOS, but in the past, they’ve actually done pretty well when creating apps for iPhones and iPads, and even porting their own design to the apps. But this time around, it feels like they were just working around Apple Watch and not much was expected.
However, maybe this is just them trying out something new and then improving later on based on the feedback. Let’s wait a few more days and see what Google has up their sleeves, or in this case, their wrist.
