Do you sometimes have that sinking feeling that Google seems to know almost everything about you? Well, with the amount of time we spend using our Google apps on our Android devices, they probably do. A reddit user says that he suddenly got an email from Google, offering $2 worth of Google Play Store credit and that it came two weeks after he started doing the MicroG experiment and going Google Apps-less during that entire period.

The screencap which he posted looks legit enough and directly says that he now has $2 credit in his Google Play account and is encouraging him to “come back to Google Play and see what you’ve been missing.” It’s actually easy enough for Google to detect when a user suddenly stopped downloading and using their Google apps and so this might be the reason why redditor “majinferno” suddenly received the email and the $2, to entice them to go back and abandon MicroG.

If you’re not familiar with what MicroG Project is, it is basically “a free software clone of Google’s proprietary core libraries and applications.” Some users have been moving to the more AOSP-friendly (that’s Android Open Source Project to you) platform, and basically abandoning Google Play to get their apps and for a lot, abandoning Google Apps altogether.

While $2 is a paltry sum and may not be enough to bring you back to Google’s side, it may be an indication that Google doesn’t want to lose you. So maybe try going back for a while if you feel like splurging on the $2 on the Google Play Store. That is, if you do receive a similar email.
