This is the 15th year that Google has released their year in search, and the results aren’t any less fascinating. We get the pulse of what the Internet-loving segment of the world was interested in and where our collective heads were at during certain points of the year. Their conclusions were that people were interested to know how they can help with various crisis that struck all over the world, they were searching for perspective, acceptance, Adele saying Hello, and of course, the Star Wars juggernaut which exploded just this month.
If you’re just going by their trending searches by list, it would seem that either people didn’t know who Lamar Odom is, or they were highly concerned with him, after his almost fatal drug overdose, as he is the top trending search word for 2015, as well as the top search word in terms of people. Paris was definitely on Google searching people’s minds as the two attacks (Charlie Hebdo earlier this year and then the Paris shootings last month) were the top two global news searches.
“How can I help Nepal?” was a top global search immediately after the devastating earthquake earlier this year. Google also says that during the height of the migrant crisis in Europe, people started searching for answers to questions like “How to adopt a Syrian orphan child?” The coming out of Caitlyn Jenner as a transgendered woman and the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage sparked searches relating to the LGBTQ community and issues.
As for pop culture, Adele’s much-anticipated release of her 3rd album burned Google lines as people kept searching for her, faster than any other musician for 2015. And as expected, people search for anything Star Wars in the weeks leading up to the release of The Force Awakens, and people will probably keep Googling everything they can learn about it in the next few weeks or so.
