You would think that since Google seems to be having a “love affair” with India that all of the basic products that the tech company has will be available there. But apparently, that’s not the case as Google Play Music is only now making its bow in the country. Finally after how many years of not being able to do so, people living in India will be able to purchase songs through Google Play Music and will be able to stream their music collection on the app.
While other media like movies, books, and TV shows were available for purchase through various Google Play gateways, music was the one elusive thing that India didn’t have. Whether it’s because of music licenses or government issues or something else entirely, Google Play Music wasn’t operating in India for some time now. Well, that is until Google made the announcement that they have already started rolling out the service to users in the country.
Aside from the usual music you’ll be able to find in most services, Google Play Music also has Bollywood music of course. It even has regional music (from Tamil, Telugu, etc) and classical music as well to create a diverse musical palate for users in India. Each song is priced at around Rs 15 while whole albums costs round $90, which is the same pricing with competitors like Apple Music where you can stream and buy the music as well.
This is one of many announcements from Google to India which includes the data-saving YouTube Go and Chrome feature, Hindi support for Google Assistant on Allo, plus more free WiFi hotspots around train stations. India is seen by many as an emerging market, since it is the second most populous country in the world after all.
