If you have a whole family of Android users and just a limited budget for app purchases, then there is good news. The long rumored Family Library, where you can share apps among trusted family members, will officially start this July. The technical side of it hasn’t been fully explained yet, but developers are already being informed and asked to decide whether their app will be included or not in the sharing format which will begin in a few months if it was purchased before July.
So basically Family Library allows up to six family members to share their Google Play apps, paid and in-app purchases, amongst their six accounts. The launch date is officially July 2 so you still have a few months to get your house in order. There are no official details yet for the user-end of things, but the past few months have seen bits of information leaked. For example, for video purchases, only one device at a time can stream a particular title. There will also be a limit as to the total streams coming from the same library. But we will have to wait on Google when they make the announcements.
What we can see for now though is on the developer side of things. The default by July 2 is that all paid apps purchased after that date will be part of the Family Library. But they can choose to opt-in for the purchases made before that date. However, once you’ve checked that box that allows your paid app bought before July 2 to be part of the Family Library, you can’t undo it. So developer, think about it carefully before you tick that box.
We expect a few more announcements before Google I/O 2016 ends, so let’s wait if user-end details will also be revealed in the next few days.
