A number of engineers and product managers from Google who are specifically working on the newly released Huawei-made Nexus 6P and the LG-made Nexus 5X went on Reddit recently for an “ask me anything” (AMA) session. They fielded questions about the Nexus Imprint, which is the fingerprint-based security system of the new Nexus phones. They also answered questions on the obvious lack of wireless charging on the two phones, especially since starting with the Nexus 4, Google was actually a fan of Qi Wireless Charging.
The Nexus Imprint system is activated by that obvious round sensor at the back of the new Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X. There is a worry that when the Nexus keeps a record of the user’s fingerprints, that this data may not be totally secure and would be hackable by anyone on the internet. Google answered that the fingerprint data is stored in protected area of the phone’s memory called “Trustzone”. They assured users that the fingerprint data never leaves the phone, and is not shared over the internet with Google. This is the reason, they say, that you would have to re-enroll your fingerprint data when you get a new Nexus device.
They were also asked the question on why wireless charging was left out of these new phones. The answer was that Qi Wireless Charging was on the earlier models to alleviate the difficulties plugging in a micro-USB Type-B. Since the Nexus 6P and 5X are both with USB Type-C ports (easier plugging, direction agnostic), Google said that they decided to “double down” on the Type-C port technology, bringing in Qualcomm’s quick charging technology (1% to 100% in 1 hour and a half) to boost the task. Also, Google says that wireless charging elements add to the thickness of the model, another vote against them.
The other semi-important issue deals with 6P’s weakness in video stabilization, which Google confirms that it will be fixing in a later update. Other than those issues, they also confirmed that the rear camera sensors of both phones are the same, with the specific issue of lower CPU/GPU on the 5X so that it can only give 120fps slo-mo. Also, the X in 5X stands for the core of the Nexus brand, and the P in 6P stands for premium.
