It’s been 10 years since we first started seeing the rest of the world from the comfort of our desks through Google Earth. We’ve been able to digitally visit those places that we plan to be in someday. They’ve also added a lot of great new features, including Street View cars (which people have had a lot of fun with) and even treks. But since the earth is indeed vast and worth exploring further, Google has now added the Voyager feature so you can see new places better.
Since this is something better looked at on a big screen, the Voyager feature is only available on the desktop version of Google Earth. It has five sections which you can explore: Street View, Earth View, 3D Cities, Satellite imagery updates, and the Highlight Tour. If you’ve always wanted to go to the Taj Mahal, well you can start prepping yourself now by looking at it from the Street View, so you can know your way around by the time you visit it finally.
Earth View gives you a spectacular view of the, well, earth, its landscapes and scenery, but from the point of view of a camera from space. You will be able to see this sometimes surreal but always fascinating view without even having to go to space. These library of images and videos comes from “Googlers” who enjoyed looking through available satellite images for these hidden gems. They are now available in a downloadable web gallery and in an Chrome extension as well.
The 3D cities section showcase selected cities and towns that have photorealistic images while the Satellite imagery section shows just that. Meanwhile, for those longing to travel but can’t leave for one reason or another, you can take the Voyager Highlight tour, which has thousands of locations included in its library. Voyager is available on desktop, and there are no indications yet if it will go mobile someday.
