The battle of the free messaging apps has received another interesting turn of events. While Viber, WhatsApp, Snapchat, LINE, etc have been making lots of updates and adding new features, Google would like to tell you that their own messaging app isn’t giving up just yet. In fact, with this latest move, they might even be giving the frontrunners a huge scare. That’s because Hangouts has now received its own webpage, away from Gmail or Google+.
This is good news for those who want to use Hangouts often, but don’t always have their apps handy or don’t want their Gmail/Google+ open all the time. Just like what Facebook did with their Messenger, you can now access Hangouts through its own webpage, which is of course hangouts.google.com. Plus it gives you a much bigger screen to have your conversations, whether it’s through Video Call, Phone Call, or Message.
The three are up front and center, with three large buttons prompting you to choose which one you’d like to use to communicate with colleagues or loved ones. The design is simple and straightforward, with an inspiring image providing as background for you while you do your calls or chats. There are no bells and whistles to distract you, just good ‘ole Material Design and the basics of what you need to communicate.
Hangouts seems to be breaking out of its mold (literally), and even the mobile versions have been updated (Material Design of course) and have made it easier to use. You can check out the new Hangouts page here.
