Google has already busted the myth that virtual reality (VR) is a bandwagon only for those who can afford it with its Google Cardboard project – a DIY approach, or at least a more cost effective one, to VR tech. As more and more companies and developers are jumping on the bandwagon and creating more VR content, Google is casting its net wider for the Google Cardboard project, making apps more available and the DIY cardboard structure more accessible.
First up, the DIY cardboard viewer is the essence of the Google Cardboard project – this makes VR accessible for almost anyone. You can now download designs for the viewer if you have the materials and patience to DIY it. If not, there is a growing number of Google-certified cardboard viewers, from the cheaper cardboard types to the more sophisticated (and expensive) Zeiss VR ONE viewer.
Google Cardboard-enabled apps are also now more available than before, with Google making them downloadable in over 100 countries via the Google Play Store. Currently, the Play Store estimates around 15 million installations of Cardboard-related apps. That’s a lot.
Lastly, there are new things to enjoy both as developer and user of Google Cardboard. The Cardboard SDK has some new tweaks to lessen drift (especially on devices with lower quality sensors), and to make sure of compatibility with Unity apps and games. For users, you might be happy to know that Google Street View is now viewable with Cardboard.
