If you’ve been sharing a music streaming account in order to save a little bit of money, but end up listening to music that’s not necessarily your jam but your sister/mother/father/brother/friend loves, then it’s time for you to just get a family plan instead of just one account. Google announced that they will be launching their Play Music Family Plans later this year, and its price is more reasonable than getting each member a separate subscription.
The new family plans will allow six members on a single subscription and each user can listen to their own music on their own device, even at the same time. There are no “group recommendations” here. Google Play Music will still tailor fit (or Taylor Swift) their recommended artists, playlists, albums, etc based on what you will be listening to from now on with your separate log in for the family plan. So you can now finally escape the boy bands your younger sister has been listening to (unless you secretly still do listen to them).
The Google Play Music Family Plans will also work well together with the newly-announced Chromecast dongles, specifically Chromecast Audio and Chromecast 2. They will both have faster connections and more stable Wi-Fi as well, so that it will be easier to stream movies and in the case of Chromecast Audio, it will enable a connection to your existing speakers, even if they don’t have Wi-Fi connections yet.
This new product will roll out later this year. The Google Play Music Family Plans will cost you $14.99 per month for 6 users already, which is still way cheaper than getting each member a $9.99 individual account.
