Abbey Road is more than just the title of a Beatles album or that iconic photo of the Fab Four on a pedestrian crossing. It is one of the most famous studios full of historical recordings from the most legendary of musicians. You can now explore this musical treasure and English Heritage site, even without going to London. As long as you have a smartphone and the Google Cardboard virtual reality headset, you can now go and tour the most famous recording studio in England.
It was just last year when Google opened up the Abbey Road Studios to the world with the Inside Abbey Road virtual tour. For the first time ever, people could go inside and see what’s so special about this studio where the likes of the Beatles and Pink Floyd recorded their greatest albums. But they have now upped the ante by creating an app specifically for the Cardboard so that viewers will have an enhanced experience when going inside (virtually) the studio.
To go on this musical and visual journey, all you have to do is download the Inside Abbey Road app from the Google Play Store, and have your Google Cardboard ready. There is a nine-part guided tour by Giles Martin, the son of the legendary “Fifth Beatle” George Martin, the late producer who recently passed away. The tour talks about the history from when it first opened in the 1930s, up to this day.
You can also explore several parts of the studio on your own, like the famous Studio 3’s Mirrored Drum Room (which is literally, a drum room with a lot of mirrors), and the Abbey Road’s Mastering Suites where the finishing touches are applied before a record is released. You can even experience an actual recording session with the London Symphony Orchestra in Studio 1. So go on and start this pretty groovy experience on your Google Cardboard.
