360 cameras are all the rage right now. Okay, not really. Or at least, not yet, as some of the OEMs who will be releasing similar cameras are hoping. But for now, it’s a showdown between the Samsung Gear 360 and the LG 360 Cam, two similar devices that want to bring the 360 videos to the consumer forefront. JerryRigEverything takes a break from destroying smartphones to testing out which of the two devices are better in terms of video and audio quality, which are the two important things you would want to look at.
The video is better watched on a smartphone and tablet, and preferably with a VR headset so you can get the full experience of watching a 360-degree video. The Gear 360 has a distinct advantage since it shoots at close to 4K resolution, so of course it will look better than the LG 360, which captures in 2K resolution. But when it comes to audio, the LG 360 has an advantage as it records in 5.1 surround sound, which is what 360 videos should have. The Gear 360 meanwhile records in stereo, so it only comes in two directions and so it is not as clear.
When it comes to the bit rate, which is the quality of the image inside the resolution, this round goes to the Gear 360 as it has 60MB/second while the LG 360 only has 18-19MB/second so that’s a pretty big difference. The former also has some more features that the latter doesn’t have, like F2.0 dual lenses so you can still take videos in low light, plus it is waterproof and has a stabilizing feature.
It’s understandable that the Gear 360 will probably win this contest, as the price is almost double than that of the LG 360. Both aren’t officially available in the US yet, so the price might change later on. You can buy the Gear 360 on Amazon for around $397.39 while the LG 360 cam is around $199.99. Both can be bought from 3rd party suppliers.
You can buy the LG 360 Cam from AT&T in the US…
With a stereo headset and so, so graphics card the Gear 360 looked and sounded better. If you had the 5.1 setup I can see the LG 360 holding it’s own and half the cost. Stabilization and water resistant the Gear 360 offers would all depend on what your using it for.
Great job on the video by the way. Thanks
